1. What did you gain from the training? From this training, I’ve gained the skills necessary to comfortably teach an hour long yoga class. It was very comprehensive and complete. I gained new knowledge about the anatomy of the body, yoga asanas, sequencing, teaching skills, and yoga beyond the asanas. Kara and Mel are so knowledgeable and experienced as practitioners, and generously share this understanding of yoga as teachers. I feel I have definitely added a transformative tool by completing this training.

2. What was your favorite part of training? My favorite part of the training has been practicing side by side with other powerful people who are just as passionate about yoga. As teacher trainees, we were able to practice together many times, both in smaller settings and in public classes. The smaller settings were great to share in a more personal manner and to ask questions openly as we all dug deeper into the practice. The public classes are filled with a wide variety of practitioners, so it was always very enjoyable to meet people of all walks of life. Sharing these experiences with the other trainees, in particular the asana practice and breath, was the part of the training I enjoyed the most.

3. What was something you learned about yourself through the process? I did so much introspection throughout this process. It was great and cathartic! I gained a better understanding on the things I like and the type of life I would like to live. Many of the sessions incorporated personal questions that made you think deeper about where you would like this path to lead you. I learned that there is beauty in imperfection, and that I need to be gentle, kind and forgiving with myself, my body and my mind.

4. Tell us about your process in learning to teach/being ready to teach! Preparation is key to feel at ease when coming in to teach. I’m very much an observer, so I have first worked on digesting the information and organizing it in my head. I then will brainstorm poses, beginning from a peak pose or a theme. Once I’ve organized my notes on the sequence, I begin to run through it physically in order to adjust anything that needs to be added or removed. For me, it is so important to feel things in my body because I still have difficulty visualizing transitions from one pose to another. Finally, the practice in this training was essential to jump in and start growing as a teacher. We were able to get great hands-on experience teaching and guiding people through the poses in this training. I think continuing to practice teaching will be necessary to solidify our new knowledge and to grow  in our yoga practice. I look forward to the new doors this training will open.
